Ysgol Y Mynydd Du opened it's doors to an excited community on Thursday 1st February, as the build draws to a completion. Despite works still going on, Wilmott Dixon and the Head of Ysgol Y Mynydd Du, opened the doors, and after a quick briefing and donning of attractive blue plastic shoe covers the tour started.
The build is part of a Cluster of five new primary schools replacing the current buildings in Clyro, Llangors, Archdeacon Griffiths Church in Wales Aided School Llyswen, Hay on Wye and Talgarth. Talgarth and the outlying village of Bronllys are unique in that the build is on a brand new site as the two schools come together under one roof.
Excited parents, grand-parents, past and present pupils explored the new building. Plenty of Wilmott Dixon staff were on hand to answer questions and point out the hi-tech features of the new school. The main focal point is 'The Street' a central, multi-discipline area that will act as the school library area and teaching/activity space. The building which is super light and crammed full of the latest health and safety features is set in a rural setting adjacent to the Town's Health Centre. With outdoor teaching and play facilities, the School footprint is set to welcome existing pupils and will certainly accommodate potential new families moving into the area. The new Public Library will also be situated on site, adjacent to School with its own entrance. Despite being smaller than the current library, the community is very pleased to have retained this facility, at a time when many Library's face closure in smaller Towns. There will be a chance for the community to also use the space for meetings etc.
We caught up with some of the staff who had not seen the building at this point of construction, and with only a few weeks away from completion they were excited and keen to get in and make it home. Wowing at the massive storage space and easy-flow through feel, you could sense the anticipation! We had a sneak look in the brand new kitchen situated off the impressive main hall, featuring surround sound and all sorts of hi-spec-tech! Gleaming, it is equipped with all the modern appliances and has a bright and open feeling. You could almost smell the apple crumble and custard!
Over a hundred people turned out on the night, along with the Town Mayor Jacqui Wilding and most of the Governing Body. We can't wait to see it open officially and see the kids and staff in their new environment.
Big thanks to Wilmott Dixon as always very accommodating with our visits!
