Talgarth Town Councilors, the Reverend Canon Rowland Edwards, and members of the community joined at the Town Memorial to lay a wreath in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of 'Victory over Japan Day' - VJ Day. The Service was lead by Rev Roland Edwards of the Parish. The wreath was laid by Army - Corporal John Finney, 1ts Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment.
The event which took place on August 15 marks the 75th anniversary of the surrender of Imperial Japan in 1945. This effectively brought the war to an end. The formal surrender took place on September 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. In Japan, August 15 usually is known as the "memorial day for the end of the war" (?????, Shusen-kinenbi); the official name for the day, however, is "the day for mourning of war dead and praying for peace" (???????????????, Senbotsusha o tsuitoshi heiwa o kinensuru hi). This official name was adopted in 1982 by an ordinance issued by the Japanese government. *Source Wikipedia.
In the UK the event was marked around the country with a 2 minutes silence at 11.00 am.
Nationally, the Prince of Wales, and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, lead the UK in a national moment of remembrance and thanksgiving at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire as part of a special televised service.
