A collective of multi-talented local arts practitioners came together with the intention of offering a powerful array of workshops to boost a sense of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Music, lyrics and song-writing featured, along with large samba and taiko drums, and so the name evolved ‘MUSIC & THE MUSE’ - WELLBEING WORKSHOPS WALES.
With their skills and experience, they provide workshops ranging from drumming and singing, to ukuleles for beginners, improvising with sounds of nature in the outdoors, yoga and mindfulness, meditation and mass Latin clavé percussion workshops for festivals.
One participant commented,
“Just as an endorsement, I can say that the workshops are absolutely bl**dy wonderful and amazing value. I really enjoyed my afternoon doing this, it was so creative and fun, surrounded by lovely, interesting women!!”
The Latin influence is present in a ‘Songs and Rhythms from Cuba’ Workshop, in joyful Samba sounds and in original lyrics written in Spanish; some members of the group have lived in Spain, played and trained in Brazil and Cuba. The drama of Taiko drumming, an exuberant performance art from Japan, also provides a potent presence and training in Japan has been funded by the Arts Council of Wales.
These elements come together in A TOPE (pronounced ah top eh). This Spanish expression means ‘wholeheartedly’, ‘brimful’ - and this is the energy and intention of the project.
Work with the A TOPE Project is focused on events, performance, workshops, festivals and funding for taking the workshops to new heights and to new audiences.
Fliss Fleck and Heather Murray, Co-Founders reflect,
“We have an unusual, interesting performance model - having created the group and developed our players through our wellbeing taiko and samba workshops - we cycle right round to a workshop style performance - blowing the performance open by bringing the audience into the playing.”
The songs are multi-lingual and the approach is to create a supportive environment to aid the development of individuals and groups. Costume, design, translation and projection form part of the performance and experience.
Shows and workshops are on the road in Wales this year, with the premiere performance at BRECON WOMEN’S FESTIVAL, Sunday March 8th, in The Muse on International Womens Day.
A warm welcome awaits!
“Couldn’t stop smiling! I’ll be back for more!” “Creative and nourishing.” “Still vibrating.” “Togetherness- sharing the sound.”
