A massive THANK YOU to Talgarth town Councillors for giving On The Verge the opportunity to present our hopes and plans for the group. We started by asking what the difference is between the Brazilian rain forest and Talgarth....the answer,of course, is nothing. We are on the same planet. Human indifference and climate change continues to devastate our wildlife habitats. On The Verge (OTV) will endeavour to preserve our existing wild flower habitats and, where appropriate, create new ones - using specifically native seeds and plants. Using any unspecified wild flower seeds can do more harm than good. Look at the American crayfish as an example.
OTV talked about it's ambitions to educate, collaborate and motivate locally and further afield. Challenging residents not to make unnecessary or short car journeys around town, to discourage the use of weedkillers, especially on dandelions, and other vital food sources for pollinators and invertebrates. To leave a wild place in gardens - don't mow lawns until late July (whats so attractive about neatly mown but barren grass?). Stop the use of peat based composts and encourage the practice of home grown plants and sharing/exchanging cuttings with others.
Finally, we talked about our two long term dreams 1/ to create a town wildlife meadow in a potager style, for locals and visitors to enjoy. 2/ Establish a social firm, growing and selling it's own organic products, employing people with learning difficulties/mental health issues.
