On Friday, April 13th Mayor Jacqui Wilding hosted a public meeting featuring the visit from Dyfed Powys Police Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn. Elected as one of the two new Plaid Cymru PCCs during 2016’s election he is a former Principal Intelligence Analyst and worked within Police intelligence for many years before, in 2014, moving to Aberystwyth University to lecture Criminology. His career has provided him with considerable insight into core policing issues as well as an understanding of what the public want from the service.
He was joined at the head of the meeting by Mr Mark Collins, Chief Constable and Superintendent Jon Cummins, BCU Commander for Powys.
After an initial welcome, Mr Llywelyn spoke of his passion for the role and what he was setting out as the core principles and objectives as our Police Crime Commissioner. With a long career formerly in the police force, he has an extensive knowledge and considerable respect within the force. Speaking candidly about some of the challenges faced by Dyfed Powys he later took questions from local residents, who specifically asked about problems with joy-riders at the Mid Wales Hospital Site and boy-racers activities in the free car park in town. Handing over to Chief Constable Mark Collins, the questions were answered and assurances were given that Dyfed Powys was working with local community groups to deal with nuisance issues. In actuality, the crime figures around the area are low compared to other areas in the county.
Finally, Superintendent Jon Cummins, a familiar face with regard to local policing initiatives and working groups gave his insight into our local police forcing structure and current operations especially with regard to 'Farm Watch' etc, road safety and speed issues, questions were also taken from other local councillors both from Hay and Lyswen, present at the meeting. The Superintendent also thanked community efforts from local PCSO Helen Scott a familiar face around Talgarth. Along with Sgt Craig Moran FYI have previously been out with the officers along with Cllr William Powell during operations focussing on Child Exploitation in particular.
Prior to the meeting, a demonstration on using Difrilators was carried out by Cariad instructor and representative Ian Thomas.
