Students form Gwernyfed High School went to the South Wales Regional Badminton Finals on March 7th, held in Cardiff. They were accompanied by Nicola Jones from Powys County Council and Ieuan Phillips of Gwernyfed, a Team Coach. Qualifying by competing in the South Powys rounds at Brecon Leisure Centre, they obtained a place by winning the tournament against Crickhowell, Brecon, Maesydderwen, Builth and Llandod High School Teams.
The students have been carrying out 2-3 weekly session during lunchtimes and after school with Ieuan Phillips badminton Coach/Head Boy who has committed his time to get them ready to compete at the level needed to enter the competition.
The Girls returned with GOLD medals after the following results -
3-2 against St Cyres
5-0 against Birtchgrove
4-1 against Bro Edeyrn
The Boys returned with Silver, just losing in the final match 21-15
3-2 against Stanwell
3-2 against Oldham
2-3 against Glantaf
Nicola Jones, Community Sports Development Officer for Powys County Council said 'I am delighted with their outstanding performances on 7 March, we are very proud of the students". The students took their medals into school and met with Head Mr John Williams who congratulated them on their win. Speaking to some of the students they told FYI that they had a fantastic time and wanted to offer thanks to Nicola and Ieuan for their support and encouragement.
Gwernyfed High School is known for its sporting achievements and this is another example of the efforts of staff and students to commit and to come home with great results. Well done all of you!
