Yscir county councillor Iain McIntosh has written to all Powys County Councillors, Powys MP's and Welsh Assembly members asking them to take action about the lack of internet speed and connectivity throughout Powys. Conservative Cllr McIntosh has just secured a deal to bring superfast broadband with a minimum speed of 30mb to all residents in his ward and is encouraging all councillors from all parties to follow suit.
Iain said "I've arranged four events within Yscir to take place this weekend inviting residents to come along to meet the chosen provider; Dyfed IT, to find out what services are now available and to discover that the cost of installation will be covered by a Welsh Government grant". Iain went on to say "I've invited all Powys County Councillors, particularly those with rural wards, MP's and AM's to come along to these events to find out how they too can take the same approach and improve internet connectivity for those areas that BT/OpenReach appear to have forgotten about". Iain revealed that Dyfed IT are offering 30mb connection to all residents for £30 per month. They are also offering a free service for the 3 village/church halls within Yscir and have a service available for households on very low income.
The county of Powys struggles to keep businesses and the younger generation here, Iain said "I don't think getting faster and more widespread internet connectivity will resolve this but it's certainly a step in the right direction".
As the cost of installing the service will be covered by a Welsh Government grant this will save residents at least £200 that other providers are demanding to install slower services.
