Crickhowell-based arts charity Peak (formerly Arts Alive Wales) are recruiting up to twelve Young People from the Brecon Beacons and the wider region for a digital arts project starting in Spring 2018.
Illumine, commissioned by Powys County Council, will see the chosen 16-25-year olds explore the landscape, culture, history, architecture and people of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the surrounding areas. They will create new and original digital content that will be shared across a range of platforms, including for display at Y Gaer, Brecon’s new cultural hub, opening in Autumn 2018.
The participants will be working alongside professional artists and creative industry professionals to develop their skills in a variety of techniques and media including Photography; Filmmaking; Animation; Sound; Light; Installations; VR; Sculpture; Design; Drone Technology and Mixed Media.
Illumine training commences in March, and over the year, individuals will attend workshops, masterclasses, residencies, studio visits and location shoots. Subsistence bursaries of up to £750 are available to each participant to cover travel, food and surplus materials.
Rachel Dunlop, Peak’s Participation Manager, is keen to recruit from a wide range of Young People in the region, including those who may be facing barriers to accessing training in core skills in the creative industries:
“The project will offer valuable training to the young ‘Image Makers’ that will support their employability and professional development. 1 in 11 jobs in the UK are in the creative industries – it’s the fastest growing sector in Wales. Illumine is a unique pathway opportunity to gain an insight into the creative sector and gain hands-on experience for those considering a creative career.”
Peak’s coordinator of the Illumine project, Seren Fenhoulhet, is inviting Young People to attend the two free taster sessions this February half term to find out more about the project and how to apply for a bursary. The taster sessions will cover photography, filmmaking and building small drones for indoor use.
Illuminate 1 & 2 will be held at Theatr Brycheiniog on Tuesday 13th and Friday 16th February during half-term. The workshops are FREE. Places are limited to 15 participants per session, so early booking is advised.
Those interested in attending one or both sessions should register by writing to seren@peak.cymru, or by calling 01873 811579.
Illumine is supported by Brecon Beacons National Park Authority Sustainable Development Fund, European Union/Welsh Government funding alongside Powys County Council and Peak.
